MovieMill is based on a portable, low-tech moviemaker and projection system of my own design, made out of an overhead projector and a slowly rotating Plexiglas disk. It churns short movies (24 frames, displayed in one minute) by placing various 2D or 3D objects on the transparent disk, allowing their various physical qualities to cast images on an adjacent wall (see images). The outcome is a low-capacity-visual-memory machine, which cannot record more than one minute, but that loops infinitely until the objects on the disk are moved. Unlike a cinematic experience, in this sculptural configuration there is no attempt to hide the means of production. MovieMill places both the projector and the moving image in the same space exactly in order to explore the tension between reality and illusion.
MovieMill lies between the traditions of nomadic-circuses and today’s mediaspace in which every iPhone has movie-making capacity.
MovieMill can be pre-loaded with imagery, and act as a dynamic sculpture, but more interestingly, it can be the basis of live interaction, at events or public spaces, where the artist can offer a ‘movie making service’ to audiences, calling them to participate by providing texts, objects, or sounds to be incorporated into the ‘movies’ on demand and in real-time. In such cases, I will be improvising an experimental visual sequence that is constructed and deconstructed constantly. Moreover, by matching images to people’s own narration I hope my MovieMill will be valued more than karaoke, perhaps a contemporary version of the writer-for-hire, putting my experimental movie-making talent to good use.
