The Colonel and I

Inspired by media imagery of violent occupation and incarceration, using video, sound and drawings Cnaani’s new work investigates the global ritual of violence from a fresh perspective. In her commanding black and white ink drawings Cnaani replaces the oppressing soldiers with forceful feminine figures, revealing a dark, uncanny and lesser world, which contends with the erotic dimensions of combat and the absurdities of war. With this potent reversal and appropriation Cnaani explores the connection between the multiple dimensions of the human desire for control, domination, the inevitable destruction, powerlessness and dependence that are the usual upshots.
